The game will continue to be updated, though perhaps less frequently than before, and Heroes will always remain one of Blizzard’s rare missteps, as the company failed to capitalize on the MOBA trend that was spawned from mods of its own games before DOTA and League of Legends got there first. Switching the Blizzard’s line-up, Heroes of the Storm has been one of the first casualties of the new cost-cutting push, with its esports scene being effectively dismantled. As such, it seems likely that yet again Infinity Ward will have to produce yet another new sub-IP this year, because Infinite Warfare 2 seems unlikely to be a huge hit on the scale Activision (and it’s picky investors) would be looking for. Infinite Warfare was the straw that broke the camel’s back for “future war” COD titles, as everyone was sick of them by then and the next year Call of Duty went back to WWII. Ghosts did not do well enough to warrant a sequel the next time Infinity Ward was up. This year, it’s Infinity Ward’s turn to make a game, but their last two efforts, Ghosts and Infinite Warfare, failed to impress most. There is good reason to be concerned about Call of Duty in 2019 because Black Ops is the biggest sub-series Call of Duty has right now. And past that, over time, Activision has jammed so many microtransactions into Black Ops 4 that it’s even caused some reviewers to delete their old positive reviews because of how much the game has been warped to trying to get players to pay at every turn. But despite being attached to one of the highest selling franchises in the world, Blackout has done little to unseat Fortnite from its throne of revenue and cultural relevance.

It was well received at launch, and its battle royale mode, Blackout, seemed like a solid addition to the franchise. Black Ops 4 has been an interesting case. Call of Duty is still a monster franchise, but even $500M in a few days of sales still caused investors to think Black Ops 4 was a tad “ disappointing” as apparently they wanted to see even more than that.
